Boy, 8, nearly drowns at rural culvert

Samuel Gross, 8, remains in critical condition after falling into a flooded creek and culvert. An eight-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being sucked into a water-filled culvert on a Hutterite colony near Portage la Prairie, Man.

Samuel Gross, along with friends, was playing Thursday evening near the opening of the culvert and was pulled under by the force of the flowing water, RCMP said.

The youngster is a resident of the Westroc Colony, about 35 kilometres northwest of Portage la Prairie.

Gilbert Gross, who arrived on the scene after Samuel's friends went for help, said the boy was unresponsive after he was pulled from the culvert.

"I wasn't really panicky, but you could tell right away that he was at no time responding. He was very blue in the face, right when we pulled him out of the water. But after a few minutes of CPR, his colour did come back some."

An air ambulance arrived at the colony 45 minutes later and the boy was flown to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

Samuel, described by relatives as shy and responsible, was playing beside the creek that runs through the colony when the accident occurred. It appears he slipped on ice and fell into the creek, which always runs high this time of year.

"If he does survive, it will be nothing short of a miracle," Gilbert Gross said. "But it's one of those things. It's tough. But if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can move mountains."

Gilbert Gross said if it wasn't for the speed and professionalism of ambulance staff, he doubts Samuel would still be fighting for his life.

Amid the threat of flooding and fast-moving water in many parts of southern Manitoba, RCMP warned people to stay away from ice-covered lakes, ponds, rivers, flooded sections and any areas where water is being diverted by culverts and drainage ditches.

During Manitoba's "Flood of the Century" in 1997, Adam Young, 14, of Winnipeg was killed when he was caught and drowned in a storm sewer.

Police closed St. Mary's Road south of Winnipeg on Friday to prevent onlookers from converging on the Red River Floodway opening where crews were working to break ice jams.

Emergency crews were later called to that site when the operator of an ice-breaking machine slipped into the river. The operator was reportedly cold, but uninjured.

Thought you might need a little comfort... here is a muse, a bit of grace God just dropped into my lap:

How often I would muse upon God's grace... in hopes of finding a resting place..

Through tempest many and rains great... I oft times pass, through God's Gate... Too, find perfect rest, where fields are many and streams abound... There, we take refuge... Where, God's hands... doth hold our heart.

Can you hear, the pleasant sound... Feel the wind, as it resounds... Now and then, I blissfully find... my minds eye, doth wonder... I'm there again, and at once... again. There... where God's hands, doth hold my heart.

Right there, in the beginning... right there, from the start. Here, the tempest doth cease, where harbors open, too greet... God's peace. There, too anchor... no more to care.

Prophet.

Isn't God great... His Spirit, too reveal, in spontaneous regale His Words do flow, where His Spirit is there I dare go...

Changed my page appearance back to black. I really like the contrast. Light never looks brighter than when it is against a black background. I guess I'm an old fuddy-duddy for a "traditional" look.

I'm just playing around with the bells and whistles here, learning how it all works. I think it's going to take some time getting used to but all in good time, they say. I'm very pleased that you are already aboard and once I have the vast volumes of information transfered to this place I think it will shape up to be quite the group. Of course, it will take considerable work. Know anyone who's interested in umm... moderating this group? :0\

Greetings, Zephyr

So good to see you here! :0) Do you know any way that I can change the colour of the boxes in comments while leaving the front page intact? Just curious. I'll keep hunting...
